PREPARATION

Books. You must purchase the first book and at least two books with sample essays. It is important that you read through a substantial number of well written essays. If you read only a few, you will tend to copy off of one of them. By reading a large number of essays, you will develop your own ideas. Being a good writer means being a good reader!

Required:

APPROACH

  1. Time. College Essay writing should begin at the end of junior year or beginning of senior year.

  2. Free consultation. We will talk about where you are in your academic career and the college application process. We will discuss schools you are thinking of applying to.

    • If they are available, please have written out each school's essay requirements (main essay and supplements with word numbers)

  3. Profile. You will fill out an academic/personal profile. This will help me get to know you and allow you to think about your interests and experiences.

  4. Start. You may begin by either meeting online for a consultation or emailing me drafts of essays that you are working on. Some students need a brainstorming session, in which we talk about ideas and possible essay topics. Other students already know their topic or have their first draft written.

  5. Meetings. Between each meeting you should be working on a new draft. Depending on the progress you make, we may meet online to discuss it, or I may simply send back your draft with new edits. This will be discussed, of course. Essay writing and editing is a highly fluid and individualized process.

  6. Editing. Edits may contain questions, comments, suggestions, or corrections. Typically in the beginning, my edits will be mostly questions. As we move further towards a final draft, I will begin to correct and rewrite parts of the essay.

    • If you are sending a draft prior to an online meeting, you must send it at least 24 hours ahead of time so that I can read it.

    • Each time I edit a draft, YOU MUST WORK FROM THAT EDIT. If you work form a previous edit or draft, you will have to redo your work on the latest edit.
